Prepare   mini encounter tables that are keyed to specific locations, make each   location feel different.

For   every encounter, embed a bit of world or setting lore. Think about the who,   what, where, when, why and how that led up to this encounter. One sentence on   one of these is probably enough.

Starting   in media res is a trusted solo technique, but it doesn’t have to be a combat.   Any action scene works.
